New Baby Monitors Hindering Infant's Personal Connection

By: Nicole Emerich
Recently electronic companies have started to release baby monitors that allow parents to parents use WI-FI connection that produces a high definition video that directly streams live to a smartphone. Not only do these new baby monitors produce a video of their child, but it also has the capability to have two-way audio, allowing parents to whisper comforting words without having to be by their child’s side. Although this new baby monitor is a large leap in the technological world it is also simultaneously depleting  the in person connection that the parent normally provides. Socialization and a strong interpersonal interaction are a large aspect to child rearing and these new technological inventions are slowly taking away from these important parts of infancy. According to an experiment conducted by Harry Harlow, the need for intimacy, warmth and physical comfort has the ability to override all other needs. It is the physical connection that truly makes a difference in an infants life. The study showed that monkeys that were raised in isolation became more hostile and distressed as they matured. Although this new baby monitor is not as dramatic it is indeed setting our society on a path that will eventually lessen the responsibility parents feel to be by their child’s side at all times. The technological world is allowing for more flexibility in the parent’s life but also hindering the amount of personal connection an infant receives.
