On February 10, 2012 an article was published about a man named Dennis Malavasi who was arrested after receiving his thirteenth DUI. Dennis Malavasi has been breaking the law for about forty years now since receiving his first DUI in 1970. By constantly breaking a law that is highly valued among many in our society, the law against drinking and driving, Dennis Malavasi has become known as a deviant. It was not until this last court hearing that Malavasi admitted to being an alcoholic. Judge Thomas H. Goethals of the criminal justice system, sentenced Dennis six years in prison for his unlawful actions. The consequences handed down by Judge Thomas display what is known as social control. The judge had previously given Malavasi a second chance by allowing him to work at the Salvation Army instead of sitting in jail, but he failed to complete the task. Dennis is guilty of recidivism because this was not the only time he has committed a crime before. In 2008 Malavasi was arrested for methamphetamine which required a three year prison sentencing. Because of the time Malavasi has already served, if he has good behavior in prison he could be released in a year and a half. Unfortunately for Malavasi, he will forever hold the stigma of an alcoholic criminal.
