Stigma in Sex

In a city such as New York City we do not expect sex to be so secretive or shameful and it is not, but something is, HIV. The cases of HIV in NYC are larger than the cases in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Washington DC combined. So what about it? Well the reduction of the HIV virus cases can be decreased as time progresses by offering something that hip and a fad. So what is it they are brand condoms, exclusively for NYC. In order to reduce the amount of cases in the big apple the New York Department of Health & Mental Hygiene decided to create there own brand of condoms. One of the workers stated that from [his] observation, [he] saw that condoms were a challenging discussion. [He stated that] perhaps it is our Puritan roots or simply that sex makes us squeamish. But condoms, despite their ability to save lives, often carry a negative stigma. [He added that] once [they] cut through that stigma, information started flowing. [They] also understood that the condom design needed to be distinctly New York and appeal to people across numerous subcultures. The creators stated, “The wrapper is designed to be bold, with big capital letters for the “NYC” contrasted by playful colors for the word ‘condom’. The dispensers can house 500+ condoms”, and the results were actually significant, people actually started conversations about them. Some went like this “look the NYC condom, let’s grab one”. And through the use of a fad the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene is cutting through the stigma of condoms and helping our society.
