The extraordinary student

PHOTO: Daniela Pelaez, a senior and valedictorian at North Miami High School, faces deportation to Columbia.

Daniela Palaez is an exceptional student from North Miami High School. She has a 6.7 GPA and has already applied to numerous  Ivy League Colleges. But there is only one thing stopping her from becoming an aspiring surgeon she hopes to become one day, this valedictorian is in risk of being deported back to her native country. When Daniela was 4 years old she was brought to the U.S from Colombia illegally.

“In a hearing…a federal immigration judge ordered… to voluntarily leave the country… after her request  for  a green card was denied.”

This article relates to chapter 8 because if she gets deported back to Colombia her life chances- her likelihood of possessing the good things in life such as education, happiness, wealth, etc. will most likely diminish. If she suddenly goes back to a country she has never been to since she was a child,  how can that contribute to her happiness? How can leaving her friends and family contribute to her happiness? Also, how can she continue getting a higher education in Colombia? If she goes back she would not even be able to graduate high school because she never even attended school in that country. Also, since America is known for its open class system, it is very likely that Daniela will attain a social status  in the future (that of a surgeon) that is due on her merit and individual effort if she is able to stay in the U.S. She would be able to move up the stratification structure.
