The Power of the Wealthy

 

According to the article, “Mansion servant enslaved by uber-rich New York family for nearly six years” published by Yahoo, a wealthy family kept an illegal immigrant from the Indian state of Kerala imprisoned inside a closet. The girl that was kept captive refers to herself as V.M. was promised by the George family a $1000 monthly wage for a tasked that consisted of caring for the George’s four young children and all the household duties. V.M. was being exploited by the George family as she was on being paid 87 cent and hour earning less than New York's minimum wages which is $7.25 per hour. It is cruel to assimilate how the difference of class power may lead some wealthy people to take advantage of the poor on behalf of their convenience. Annie George the owner and prime suspect of this terrible case is now facing criminal charges for keeping and illegal immigrant as an indenture servant and forcing her to live in a closet for nearly six years.
