Right now, Annie George, wealthy woman from upstate New York, is facing criminals charges for illegally keeping an indentured servant in her mansion called Llenroc. The indentured servant, a woman know only as "V.M" from Kerala, Indian has worked for the widowed George for almost six years. She was brought to the mansion by George and forced to live in a closet for the duration of her time at Llenroc. She was promised close to $1000 a month to work for the family and take care of their four small children, but upon investigation, it seems that she has been cheated out of her proper pay for the past six years. She worked 17 hour days seven days a week for the whole duration and was not allowed sick or personal days, or any time off. Immigration officers were tipped off to the situation and removed "V.M" from the house. She is reportedly entitled to $206,000 that was never payed to her.
This situation is clearly a demonstration of power. Annie George is exceedingly wealthy and therefore used her prestige to attain and secure an indentured servant. Because George was "V.M" sole source of income, "V.M" was stuck between a rock and a hard place. She needed money for her family in India yet she was forced to work in horrible conditions for a meager wage. We see in this article how money sure can have a power over people and in many cases, be destructive.
