Black History Competition Aims to Celebrate Youths' Academic Prowess

The Black365 Knowledge Bowl Competition, based in Antelope Valley, aims to broaden and showcase the positive accomplishments of people of African descent. The founder, Jamaal Brown, created this Jeopardy type competition in order to ensure African American youth were not "as shortsighted as I was." Currently, African Americans are recognized as an ethnic minority, but the Black365 Knowledge Bowl has been actively working to ensure the you are integrating all races into their historical referencing. Assimilation is a large aspect of this competition; the process in which groups with distinctive identities become culturally and socially fused together. Not only does this competition work to strengthen the academic success of the younger generation, but it also works to break the stereotypes that are often associated with African Americans. There are other outlets and career paths besides being an athlete, gang member, entertainer or drug dealer, and this competition exists to prove just that. Jamaal Brown has dedicated her life in order to create “an institution where our community could celebrate our youth more than just for their athletic prowess ... but for their academic prowess."
