A case classified at the micro level of sociology occurred on January 9, 2012 when a New York City high school teacher named Joan Barnett was fired after lying to school authorities. Joan Barnett was on vacation in Costa Rica for a week and a half when she decided the trip was not long enough. Joan wanted another week off from her work so she came up with a plan to fake her daughter's death. Joan instructed one of her daughters to call the school she worked at and tell them that her sister had a heart attack while in Costa Rica. School officials allowed Joan an additional week off of work to deal with her daughter's funeral. Due to the high amount of requests made for time off, the employers requested a death certificate. Joan provided them with a forged certificate which worked for a couple of years. It wasn't until recently that the school investigator reviewed the file and realized the death certificate was fake. The investigator called Costa Rica officials to check the case and they reported back that the death certificate was indeed fake. The power of the court gave Joan a misdemeanor after she plead guilty to forgery. She was fired from the school and lost her $37,000 yearly salary. Joan's unlawful decision to lie and break the law in order to cheat the system added to the dysfunction that exists in society today.
