Iraq's Stereotypical Crimes


Serious hate crimes against people who are stereotyped as gay or emo have been occurring in Iraq since February of 2012. Iraq has stoked fear within many communities, in their eyes, the government might be unwilling or unable to protect them. In Baghdad, at least 14 victims were said to be killed, however, rights activist state more than 100 have been killed. Discrimination has been brought to this innocent people because they do not stick to the norms of Iraq. Norms such as dressing in black, and being covered up completely. Due to this “acts”, many have received letters stating “We strongly warn every male and female debauchee, if you do not stop this dirty act within four days, then the punishment of God will fall on you at the hands of Mujahideen,”. Letters such as these have convinced many teenagers to cut their hair and dress different, so they will not targeted.
